Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Highway Safety Research Center

Welcome to the Institute For Driver Safety website. IDS was founded by Dave Kelleher, a Funeral Director with many years of first-hand experience of the tragic consequences of young driver inexperience. He created the IDS to lobby for a Graduated Driver Licensing system that would restrict 16 & 17 year olds drivers licenses and expand driver training.

IDS is a 501(c)(3) organization and all contributions are fully tax deductible.

What are we doing, now?

Graduated Driver Licensure We are currently developing a public information campaign on the hazards of teen driving to encourage the public to support legislation to be introduced in the 2006 Mississippi Legislature. The bill will call for a Graduated Driver Licensing system whereby 16 year-olds can receive driver permits, 17 year-olds can receive intermediate licenses, and 18 year-olds a full unrestricted license.

Expanding Drivers Education into Driver Training.

The traditional “30/6” Driver Education programs taught throughout school systems in Mississippi does a great job of preparing a new driver to learn to drive. Since these programs provide only six hours of BTW (behind-the-wheel) training, it is essential to augment the number of hours of supervised permit driving. IDS provides certain resources to aide parents and driver education instructors with expanded driver training: Currently, we make available copies of the National Safety Council’s “Family Guide to Teen Driving” as well as the AAA’s driving video.
